Flora, my Morkie (Maltese/Yorkie mix). Well, she's more of my mom's baby.
3 years ago, my mom decided she wanted a puppy. It was pretty shocking considering that she was a neat freak and that my dad REFUSED to have cats or dogs. He grew up in the northeast countryside of the Philippines where his parents owned a lot of farmland, and he had a lot of pets (cats, dogs, horses, cattle...you name it). But they weren't the homebody companion type of pets as we know of. They were all outdoors. So his idea of having pets inside the home (with the exception of fish, parakeets, and hamsters, which were the other pets I used to have) made him feel squeamish.
However, my mom and I were searching on the internet for Shi Tzus and other small dogs that she was interesting in. My sister suggested that we go to the local shelter. Thank God we went out the same day, because I found and fell in love with Aristotle "Aris". He was a really shy pup and did not want to leave the bed in his kennel. I almost got his next-door neighbor, Cowboy, a long-haired chihuahua. But another couple wanted him, so minutes before the shelter was about to close, I decided that I wanted to meet Aris first. And my mom, nephew and I were placed in a small room to meet him and see if we were a match. Aris was jumping all over me and licking me. It was love at first meet.
We also added another love bug in our life, Natasha, last year when my mom met her now-partner, Bart.
I always knew that when I get married, I would be bringing Aris with me. It's been very difficult for my mom to let go as I move to this next phase in my life. I'm sure most (if not all) parents of the bride and groom, get very emotional. It's extra difficult because I am bringing Aris, and she loves him dearly even though Flora is hers. He was our first doggie, and even though he is very mean (except for the few people he loves), they have a special bond.
That is when she and Bart start talking about getting another dog, and she surfs the classified ads for the perfect pooch.
And I teamed up with PuppySpot to help you find the perfect dog breed for you (if you like dogs, that is. I've always loved both, but I used to be a cat person. My mom hates them though. I would still like a feline friend in the future though.)
We (my mom, sister Sarah and Bart) are currently living in a big house with a yard. For training, yes we would like to teach the basics to Aris and Flora, because goodness gracious they are the poster children of Small Dog Syndrome. My mom works from home every Monday and Friday, but there is always someone present because Sarah has autism and needs constant adult supervision. That leads us to the Loyal Companion being our perfect match.
Flora fits the Loyal Companion to a T. Though she acts vicious and barks at strangers, she will warm up to you very easily. She is the most affectionate of the 3: when you try to cuddle with Aris, he squirms. He will cuddle occasionally, but only on his own terms. Same with Natasha, though she is more of the Easy-Going Playmate. She is kind and quiet, but will not act out like the 2 little ones. For Flora? Oh, she is one of the most affectionate pups I have ever met. She loves lying down on your lap. Her favorite spots are the top of the couch, and she will still rest on your head and shoulder. Even though she and Aris are loud, they keep us safe from potential danger. Especially Aris. Aris is unassuming, and no one would expect him to nip at you.
Next time my mom brings up the subject of getting another dog, I will recommend PuppySpot to her.
If you are more interested in finding out different dog breeds or are in search of a furrever friend, please check out PuppySpot! Here are some of the puppies for sale :)
Do you have a dog?
What dog breeds are you interested in?
NOTE: I want to let you guys know that PuppySpot is not a puppy mill. They have zero-tolerance for puppy mill practicing (unlicensed breeding in low quality conditions with unhealthy dogs). They are USDA licensed and require breeders to be USDA licensed as well. There is a tough screening process and PuppySpot does regular check-ins with breeders to ensure that the puppies are healthy and received the highest quality of care. I would actually rather you adopt and save a life, but I understand that some are interested in a particular breed. If you are dead-set on a purebred or designer (a mixed dog where both parents are purebred), make sure that you look for a USDA or AKC (American Kennel Club) licensed breeder. DO NOT search through a random pet store. Petco and PetSmart have private rescues and weekend adoptions for dogs and cats. That is ok. But the pet store in the mall I grew up going to that had puppies in tiny cramped kennels? Not ok. No wonder they closed down a few years ago.
