When I first saw the NYX "In Your Element" palettes released, I needed to have the "Earth" one. I loved the colors, but I couldn't justify spending $30 on them. That's about as much as a high end palette! Usually, some of the more expensive NYX palettes don't go over $20. However, Ulta had a 30% off sale for all NYX products, so I immediately snatched up this baby.
NYX recently released their "In Your Element" line, consisting of 6 palettes and multiple lipstick shades inspired by the elements: water, metal, wind, earth, air and fire. The Earth palette spoke to me the most because it had a mixture of neutrals and jewel-toned shades. I don't like pastel or blue shadows so I would never consider getting the water, metal, wind or air palettes and I didn't care too much for the fire one. Plus, I couldn't resist the bright green in the Earth palette.
I can see why these cost $30 though. First off, these came in a box. Most high-end palettes have a box, which adds to the price. The box and the palette's case were designed in an incredibly detail-oriented and aesthetically pleasing way. These palettes also have a mirror. Most NYX eyeshadow palettes do not have a box or a mirror, and have a clear case cover where you can see the shades. The case is pretty sturdy, if I say so myself. So this definitely feels like a higher-end palette.
The shades are insanely pigmented too, almost like the Anastasia Beverly Hills eyeshadows. I have to actually be careful to not pick up too much product with my brush: it's that pigmented. Whereas with other drugstore brands (even the other NYX ones), I have to keep swiping for a halfway-decent amount of product. It feels expensive and luxe. I would say that it's more pigmented than the shades from the Urban Decay Full Spectrum!
Each shade has 0.05 oz worth of product, and there are only 12 shades. The NYX Warm Neutrals palette has 16 shades, but only have 0.02 oz worth of product (which is why it cost only $18). So the "In Your Element" palettes have more bang for your buck. Also, the packaging of the "In Your Element" palette feels heavier.
Technically, this palette consists of eyeshadow and pressed pigment. The shades are numbered in the back. Shades 1, 3, 4, 6, 10, 11 and 12 are the eyeshadows and 2, 5, 7, 8, and 9 are the pressed pigments.
1. matte cream
2. matte deep burgundy
3. matte medium cool brown
4. matte bluish gray
5. metallic yellow gold
6. metallic emerald green
7. shimmer magenta
8. shimmer coral
9. metallic pink
10. matte gray
11. metallic golden taupe
12. matte medium warm brown
This is the type of palette you can have fun and be creative with. You can also use #1-2, #4, #10-12 as everyday wear since they are neutrals. My favorite shades are #2, #6, #7, #11, and #12. With #6, you do have to build it up a little bit because it is the least pigmented of the shades, and I would highly recommend a primer if you really want it to pop. However, if you build it up enough it still has decent pigmentation. It's a lot better than some of the shades of UD Full Spectrum, the "Candied Violet" from TF Original Chocolate Bar, and "Blueberry Swirl" from TF Semi-Sweet Chocolate Bar.
Here are some of the looks I created with this palette:
This was a bold look for the office, but I went to a concert that night which why I created that look!
Even though I purchased this during the 30% sale, I absolutely would've paid full price for this. It's totally up to par with the high end eyeshadows (and even better than some of them!) in terms of packaging and pigmentation. NYX totally killed it with this palette, and I'm reaching for this frequently. You can purchase this palette on NYX.com. Even though I bought this from Ulta, for some reason it's not available right now (but the other elemental palettes are).
What are your thoughts on this palette? Do you like the Earth or the other element palettes from NYX?
